About Penman Stephen
Professor Penman Stephen will present his latest research on May 3 at GSM. Stephen is the George O. May Professor in the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University. Prior to his appointment at Columbia in 1999, Penman was the L.H. Penney Professor in the Walter A. Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley. He joined Berkeley in 1977. Professor Penman received a first-class honors degree in Commerce from the University of Queensland, Australia, and MBA and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago.
His research focuses on equity valuation and the role of accounting information in security analysis. Further, several of his papers analyze accounting policy issues. In 2023, the Financial Accounting and Reporting Section of the American Accounting Association recognized Stephen Penman with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Stephen’s recent research explores the risk information conveyed by accounting numbers and its implication for asset pricing.
